Speed, security & accessibility

The parts nobody notices until they go wrong.

Performance, security and accessibility work for business websites — measured, fixed and verified rather than asserted.

Speed

Slow sites lose people before they see anything.

Performance is a ranking factor and, more importantly, a conversion factor. Rural connections make it matter more here than in a city.

Measured, not guessed

Real numbers for load time, layout shift and responsiveness — before and after, so you can see what changed.

Images are almost always the problem

Oversized files, wrong formats, no dimensions set. Usually the single biggest win available and the easiest to fix.

Scripts and third parties

Chat widgets, trackers and embeds each cost something. Most sites carry several nobody remembers adding.

Layout shift

Content jumping as the page loads. Infuriating for users, penalised by Google, and usually fixed by declaring image dimensions.

Caching and delivery

Correct cache headers and a CDN, so repeat visits are close to instant.

Hosting

Sometimes the honest answer is that the hosting is the bottleneck and no amount of tuning fixes it.

Security

Small business sites are attacked constantly.

Not targeted — scanned automatically, at scale, all the time.

Patching

Out-of-date software is how nearly every small site gets compromised. Keeping it current is unglamorous and it is the whole game.

Backups that are tested

An untested backup is a hope. Restores get verified, not assumed.

Sensible hardening

HTTPS everywhere, security headers, admin protection, spam and bot filtering on forms.

Monitoring

Knowing the site is down or defaced before a customer tells you.

Accessibility

A legal consideration and a commercial one.

Accessible sites work better for everyone, and the fixes are usually small.

The common failures

Missing alt text, poor contrast, form fields with no labels, and keyboard navigation that does not work.

Why it is also commercial

Accessibility overlaps heavily with usability and SEO. Proper headings, labels and alt text help search engines for the same reasons they help screen readers.

Realistic scope

Full WCAG AA conformance is a project. Most of the practical benefit comes from a much shorter list, and we will tell you where the line is.

Common questions

Questions we get asked.

Straight answers, no sales pitch.

How do I know if my site is slow?

Open it on a phone on mobile data, away from wifi. That is your customer's experience, and it is usually a surprise.

Can you speed up a site you did not build?

Usually. Image and caching fixes apply almost anywhere. If the platform itself is the bottleneck we will say so rather than bill you for tuning.

Is my site actually at risk?

If it is running outdated software with no maintenance, yes. Most compromises are automated and indiscriminate — nobody chose you.

What happens if we get hacked?

With backups and monitoring: restore and patch. Without them it can mean rebuilding, plus whatever the search-ranking damage costs.

Do we legally need an accessible website?

Requirements vary by jurisdiction and organisation type, and they have been tightening. Beyond compliance, it is simply a better site.

Is this included in a management plan?

Patching, backups, monitoring and uptime checks are. Deeper performance and accessibility work is scoped separately.
