Local SEO, minus the mystique

Local SEO has been dressed up as something arcane by people who charge monthly for it. It isn't.

It's a short list of unglamorous jobs, most of which your competitors haven't done either. That's the opportunity.

Your Google profile does more than your website

For local searches, the map block usually sits above everything, and it runs on your Google Business Profile rather than your site. If you do exactly one thing, do this.

Claim it. Pick the most accurate primary category — that one field has more pull than people expect, and getting it wrong makes everything downstream harder. Fill in service areas, hours, services. Add photos of your actual work and premises, not stock images of somebody else's. Keep it current.

Pick one address format and never deviate

Google cross-references your details across the web. When your address appears three different ways across your site, your profile and some directory you forgot about in 2019, it weakens confidence in all of them.

Tedious to fix. Genuinely helps. Nobody does it.

One page per service, one per town

A single page listing everything you do will rank for none of it. Search engines match specific pages to specific searches, and a page about eleven things isn't specific about any of them.

Same for areas. Real pages for the towns you serve — and I mean real. Swapping the town name into otherwise identical text is a doorway page. It reads as thin to Google and to humans, and it can hurt you rather than help. Each one needs something actually true about working there.

Ask for reviews like you mean it

Reviews move rankings and they move decisions. Ask every satisfied customer, every time, as a habit rather than an occasional push.

Reply to all of them, including the bad ones. Especially the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a complaint reassures a future customer far more than a wall of five stars with no responses — because it shows somebody's actually there.

Don't buy them. It breaks platform rules, it's obvious to anyone reading, and it puts the whole profile at risk for a short-term bump.

The floor you have to clear

None of the above rescues a site that's broken underneath. Fast on a phone on bad rural signal. Works on mobile. HTTPS. A real title and description on every page. Local business schema so search engines can read your details without guessing.

These aren't tricks. They're the conditions under which the rest is allowed to work.

Write the boring stuff

The best-performing local content is deeply unglamorous. What a job costs around here. How long it takes. What permits you need. What changes in February at minus thirty.

You know all of it because you do the work. Writing it down is the only step anyone skips.

How long

Profile changes can show in weeks. Ranking movement from content takes months. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is either buying ads or lying, and you should ask which.
